Which is it? Replica, Tribute, Clone, Recreation or Kit car?
OK, so it's not original, but what is it, a replica, a tribute, a clone, a recreation or a kit car? The terms can be confusing, and although sometimes interchangable, there is a difference.
Replica – requires donor-car.
Tribute – tributes/duplicates an actual/exact car in history – ’68 Mustang Fastback to ‘Bullitt’.
Clone – clones an existing car of same make/model year. i.e., Porsche 914-4 to 914-6.
Recreation – no donor car, built from the ground up.
Kit car - built from parts sent from vendor i.e., TVR, Lotus 7, Cobra.
1 1967 Shelby Cobra 427: The Cobra is perhaps the most desirable sports car on the planet. It’s also the most replicated. Fortunately, it’s difficult to pass off one of the replicas as the real deal; the Shelby Club maintains a registry of the originals by serial number and history.
2 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder: The 550 Spyder (of James Dean death car fame) and the more common bathtub-like Porsche 356 Speedster have a long history of being replicated. The originals were alloy and steel, respectively, and the replicas are fiberglass, so there’s no danger of one being passed off as the real thing.
3. 1961 250 GT Ferrari California Spyder: A very bogus California Spyder built by a company called Modena Industries shot to fame as the hero car in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” About 50 were built between 1987 and 1989, before Ferrari said “stop!”
4. Ferrari 308 GTS: After the “Ferris Bueller” car, the Ferrari with the most screen exposure was the red Ferrari 308 GTS that Tom Selleck drove on “Magnum P.I.”
5. 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster. A replica Speedster was featured in the opening scene of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.”
6. Lotus Seven: Built by Lotus 1957-1972, and subsequently by Caterham to present. The Lotus Seven design has spawned a host of imitations on the kit car market, generally called Sevens or Sevenesque roadsters.
